If temperatures are regularly above 70 degrees or you are still sporting a sunburn from recent outdoor activities, thinking about your furnace or boiler now may seem premature. However, there are many reasons to have your furnace or boiler inspected before cold weather arrives including:
- It is easier to make an appointment in the early fall
- You have plenty of time in case your equipment needs to be repaired or replaced
- There is also time for replacement parts to arrive
- Replacement filters are often cheaper in the off-season
It may be time to seek an upgrade, particularly if your furnace is old or your hot water boiler does not seem to be handling demands as well. If your equipment is still in good shape, then a thorough inspection and cleaning will give you peace of mind as the weather begins to change.
2. Invest in Energy Star Appliances
Energy Star rated boilers and furnaces are among the most energy efficient models available. In order to receive an Energy Star rating, the equipment must meet or surpass standards and guidelines imposed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The standards have forced new technologies and resulted in equipment that is much more energy-efficient than traditional models.
Otherwise, if you haven’t already, consider switching to oil heat as opposed to gas or electric. Oil heating units produce more heat but require less energy, keeping you warm while reducing home heating costs.
3. Purchase Oil Before the Temperature Drops
In order to help save on fuel costs and avoid a last-minute rush, contact your fuel supplier and make sure your tank is filled well before winter. Investing in a larger oil tank could prove to be cost-effective, as buying oil is typically cheaper the more gallons you purchase at once.
Preparing your supply ahead of time can help you save money by giving you a bit of leeway. If prices are cheaper in the summer, then stock up. If national oil prices seem a little high, however, then preparing ahead of time will give you a bit of wiggle room, or time to wait and see if prices will drop.
